Dear friends, family & co-workers!
We hope this finds you well and that you’re enjoying the beginning of spring. We are now back in England, pleasantly surprised by the warm weather! It is nice to be back home again- we made it right on time for Naoko to enjoy her first Shrove Tuesday with our family!
Last week, we were able to officially graduate from the Discipleship Training School at YWAM Muizenberg! After a week of debriefing the outreach and celebrating the end of our school, we returned to England on the 3rd of March. Thank you so much for enabling us to have such a powerful learning experience as a couple. We would like to share with you a little bit about the outreach we led in Turkey.
Since it was our first time to lead a team overseas, this was such a good learning experience for the both of us! Thanks to your prayers, God protected us in every way the whole time and we were all able to return in one piece! Being responsible for the physical and spiritual well-being of the team as well as being in charge of the schedule and finances, we both came to realise our own areas of immaturity and lack of experience and really had to rely on God during those 2 months. We now realise the importance of discipleship, and we really desire to grow in experience so that we can better disciple young people and, with God’s help, live as good examples for them! The biggest blessing was perhaps the fact that our team remained unified the whole time- by the end of outreach we had all become like family.
In regards to ministry, our work was focused on encouraging the existing churches and ministries rather than evangelism. We taught English at a church in Ankara for 4 weeks, and enjoyed getting to know the people there even though everything was entirely in Turkish! We were also able to meet many Iranian refugees who had fled to Turkey due to persecution against their faith. One man hosted us in his home for a week, and he became like a brother to us. Through him we were able to meet a few other Iranian refugees, and it was humbling to see just how much they were encouraged through us visiting them! We were so privileged to be able to meet them and hear their stories firsthand. Please keep these Iranian brothers and sisters in your prayers, as they continue to worship Jesus while being scattered all over the world.
We also spent some time on the western coast of Turkey, near the ruins of Ephesus. In God’s perfect timing, we happened to be there just when a local church needed help to move out of their building! We were able to help knock down walls, carry heavy boxes and paint walls in the new building while also enjoying to get to know the amazing group of people there- they passionately believe that God will revive Ephesus as the centre of Christianity once more! We cannot help but pray that the Gospel would spread from Ephesus to Asia again, just like it did in the Bible.
After our 2 months in Turkey, we have now all returned to our home countries: South Africa, England, Finland, America and Germany. Through many precious encounters with people from all over the world, we are once again reminded of the greatness of the love of Jesus. And we remember that we were able to do this DTS because of your generosity and support through prayers. We thank God for each and every one of you- and we hope that this is an encouragement to you too!
As for our next steps, we will be in England for at least the next couple of months as Gary tries to learn to drive! We have also been praying for a long-term calling, and we both feel strongly that God is calling us back to Japan! This is a huge heart change for Naoko especially, but God has been preparing both of our hearts and we are both excited to be returning to a country where there are so many unreached, broken people. (During our time away, many people would meet Naoko and say “it’s my first time meeting a Japanese Christian!” We really desire to see more and more Japanese people coming to know God and also being sent out.) Please be praying that God will continue to guide us and open the right doors as we prepare for what to do and how to live there. We will most likely return to Japan around the beginning of June.

Graduation Love Feast 卒業パーティーにて
お久しぶりです！
日本は花粉症の季節が到来した頃でしょうか・・・
皆さまいかがお過ごしですか？
私たちは先日、晴れてYWAMの弟子訓練学校を卒業しました！後半の海外派遣に関する反省・振り返りのミーティングと卒業式の１週間を終え、無事に南アフリカからイギリスに戻って来たところです。ようやく一息つくことができたので、応援して下さった皆さまにご報告をさせていただきます＾＾
トルコでの２ヶ月間は、初めてチームリーダーという立場で奉仕させていただいたので、夫婦そろってとてもいい勉強になりました。皆さまのお祈りに支えられ、全員最後まで元気に過ごせたことが何よりも感謝です。メンバーの健康と安全、信仰生活や個人の悩みなどに気を配りながら衣食住を共にしたので、自分たちの未熟さや経験不足と向き合いながら、主にすがりつつ頑張った２ヶ月間でした。今後もっと経験を積んで、クリスチャンとして生きることの喜びや主からの知恵を分かち合うことのできる者に成長していきたいです。今回の経験を通して改めて、クリスチャンの夫婦として若い人達にとって少しでも良き模範となれるよう、主から与えられている責任を感じました。
現地での奉仕活動の内容としては、トルコ人への伝道というよりはむしろ、既に存在する教会やクリスチャンたちを励まし、色々な形でお手伝いする時間となりました。アンカラの教会では４週間にわたり英語のレッスンをさせていただき、トルコ語の礼拝に参加しながら教会員の方々と交流を深める楽しいひとときを過ごしました。また、クリスチャンであるがゆえに迫害を受け、トルコに逃れて来たイラン人難民の方々と多く出会いました。特に、１週間自宅にお世話になったH兄とは兄弟のように親しくなり、激しい迫害を受けながらも信仰を捨てずに歩み続ける彼の生き方に、自分たちの信仰のあり方を強く問われる思いでした。同時に、H兄をはじめ多くのイラン人難民の方々が、私たちとの出会いを通して信仰的に励まされ、共に賛美と祈りの時間を持てたことが何よりも嬉しかったです。小さな私たちをそのように用いてくださった主の御手の業にハレルヤ！迫害を受け、世界中に散らされてもなお主を礼拝し続けるイラン人の兄弟姉妹たちのためにどうぞお祈りください。（ちなみにイランでは日本の名作「おしん」が大ヒットだそうで、H兄と熱〜く語り合いました！＾＾）
他にも、クシャダスというトルコ西海岸の街では、ある教会が大至急引っ越さなくてはならないというピンチの事態に居合わせ、荷物運びや壁のペンキ塗りなど沢山お手伝いすることができました。何も知らずに訪れてそのようにお役に立てたので、教会員の方々とともに、主の導きの素晴らしいタイミングに感謝と賛美を捧げました。ちなみにクシャダスはエフェソ遺跡のすぐ近くなので、実際に遺跡を訪問し、聖書の世界に直に触れることができて大感激！主がこれからもエフェソにある教会を祝福し、聖書にあるようにそこから再びアジアに福音が広がりますよう祈るばかりです。
そんなこんなで過ごしたトルコでの２ヶ月間。家族のように親しくなったチームメイトたちも、それぞれ南アフリカ、アメリカ、フィンランド、ドイツ、イギリスへと帰っていきました。多くの人たちとの大切な出会いを通して、世界中で変わらないイエスさまの愛の大きさを改めて感じます。このような学びの時を過ごせたのも、皆さまのお祈りと応援のおかげです。私とギャリーがYWAMでの訓練を受けられるよう応援下さり、本当にありがとうございました！
今後の予定としては、まずはイギリスにしばらく滞在し、ギャリーは念願の運転免許取得を目指します！また、今後の長期的な召しについて今まで祈り続けてきましたが、日本に帰国するようにと主から示されているように感じます。皆さまもきっとご存知の通り、海外での奉仕活動を夢見て日本を飛び出した私にとって、帰国を決断することは容易ではありませんでしたが、確信に至れるまで主が一歩一歩私の心を導いてくださりました。私の不安や弱さよりも大きな、主の導きとご計画を信頼し、夫ギャリーの召しに寄り添って日本に戻ります（帰国は今年６月頃になりそうです）。具体的に日本でどのように生活・活動するのかについてはこれから祈りつつ準備をしていくので、主が御心のままに扉を開き、私たちを導いてくださるようお祈りいただけたら心強いです。
イギリス、南アフリカ、トルコの３ヶ国で過ごしてきましたが、数多くの人から「日本人のクリスチャンに初めて会った〜！」という反応をもらいます。離れてみて改めて、日本という国の素晴らしさに気づかされると同時に、まだ神様の愛を知らない多くの人々のために心が砕かれるようにもなりました。日本にもっと、イエスさまの愛が広がりますように。その働きに加えていただけることを楽しみに、帰国の日をギャリーと心待ちにしています。
長くなってしまいましたが、いつも私たちを祈りに覚え、応援してくださる皆さまに心からありがとうございます。
皆さまお一人おひとりの上に、今日も主の平安がありますように！また、それぞれの場所にあって必要としている励ましや導きが豊かに備えられますように。
